The picks in detail

Best hands-off machine

Ninja AutoBarista Automatic Espresso Machine (AE1001UK)

Ninja's AutoBarista is built for people who want great coffee and zero fiddling. Pick a drink and AutoBarista Technology handles the grind, the brew and the froth. There are ten one-touch drinks: Americano, Cappuccino, Cold Brew, Cold-Pressed, Filter Coffee, Espresso, Flat White, Hot Water, Latte and Over Ice. That's more cold options than most rivals.

The milk side is hands-free too, with four froth presets: Steamed Milk, Thin Froth, Thick Froth and Cold Foam. Two user profiles save each person's strength, size, temperature and froth style. For cleaning, the drip tray, milk jug, bean hopper and puck bin are dishwasher-safe, the steam wand purges itself, and the machine rinses automatically at start-up and shut-down.

  • 10 one-touch drinks including Cold Brew, Filter and Over Ice
  • Automatic frothing with 4 presets including Cold Foam
  • 250g bean hopper; built-in grinder
  • 2 user profiles; 1,650W
  • Dishwasher-safe removable parts; self-purging steam wand; auto rinse; 2-year guarantee

Why it's lazy-approved

  • It does the barista bit for you
  • Hot and iced drinks from one machine
  • Most removable parts go in the dishwasher

Worth knowing

  • Uses a milk jug rather than a carafe you store in the fridge
  • Lots of features if you only drink espresso

Best for two kinds of bean

De'Longhi Rivelia (EXAM440.55.BG)

The Rivelia's clever bit is the Bean Switch System: two interchangeable 250g bean hoppers. Keep regular in one and decaf in the other (or two different roasts), and swap with a twist. No more emptying the hopper when someone wants decaf after 3pm.

There are 16 one-touch recipes on a 3.5" colour touchscreen, and the LatteCrema Hot carafe tops them with foam. Bean Adapt Technology walks you through finding the right grind, extraction temperature and aroma for each bag of beans, and you can save the settings by name.

  • 2 × 250g interchangeable bean hoppers (Bean Switch System)
  • 16 one-touch recipes; 3.5" full-touch colour display
  • LatteCrema Hot milk carafe
  • Bean Adapt Technology for grind, temperature and aroma
  • Includes water filter, ground coffee scoop and water hardness test

Why it's lazy-approved

  • Decaf and regular without emptying hoppers
  • Plenty of one-touch recipes

Worth knowing

  • The priciest De'Longhi here
  • No cold drinks listed

Best one-touch milk drinks

De'Longhi Magnifica Evo (ECAM290.83.TB)

The Magnifica Evo is the sensible middle ground. You get seven one-touch recipes (Latte Macchiato, Cappuccino, Espresso, Coffee, Doppio, My Latte and Hot Water and Milk) with milk handled by the LatteCrema carafe. My Latte lets you save your own coffee, milk and foam quantities.

The grinder has 13 settings, the hopper takes 250g of beans, and you can use pre-ground coffee too. Cleaning is low-effort: there's an auto-clean function, the carafe components and drip-tray grid are dishwasher-safe, and the brewing unit lifts out. There's also a steam wand if you'd rather froth by hand.

  • 7 one-touch recipes including My Latte
  • LatteCrema milk carafe, plus a steam wand
  • 13 grind settings; 250g hopper; pre-ground option
  • 15-bar pressure; Thermoblock heating
  • Auto-clean; auto shut-off; dishwasher-safe carafe parts and drip-tray grid

Why it's lazy-approved

  • Proper one-touch milky coffees
  • Easy-clean carafe

Worth knowing

  • One hopper, so decaf means swapping beans
  • Fewer recipes than the Rivelia

Best budget bean-to-cup

De'Longhi Magnifica S (ECAM22.110.B)

The Magnifica S has been around for years, and that's the point: it's a simple, proven bean-to-cup. A soft-touch control panel makes espresso-based drinks, and it can brew two cups at once. The integrated grinder has 13 settings, and you can use pre-ground coffee as well.

Milk is the manual bit. The frother combines steam, air and milk for cappuccinos and lattes, but you hold the jug. If you mostly drink black coffee or don't mind 30 seconds of frothing, it's the cheapest route to bean-to-cup here.

  • Espresso and coffee at the touch of a button; 2 cups at once
  • Manual milk frother (steam)
  • Integrated grinder with 13 settings
  • Works with beans or ground coffee

Why it's lazy-approved

  • Simple controls with not much to learn
  • Fresh-ground coffee for less

Worth knowing

  • Frothing milk is manual
  • No touchscreen or user profiles

How to choose a bean-to-cup coffee machine

1. Milk: carafe, automatic or manual?

A carafe (like the Rivelia and Magnifica Evo) means one-touch lattes. Ninja's automatic frothing system also does it for you. A manual steam wand is cheaper but means hands-on frothing.

2. How many coffee drinkers?

Two different coffee preferences? Look for user profiles (Ninja) or swappable hoppers (Rivelia).

3. Hot or iced?

If you like cold brew or iced coffee, the Ninja AutoBarista lists Cold Brew, Cold-Pressed and Over Ice drinks.

4. Cleaning

All bean-to-cups need descaling and regular cleaning. Look for auto-rinse, dishwasher-safe parts and a removable brewing unit. With a countertop dishwasher to handle the parts, the whole thing gets even lazier.

5. Bean-to-cup, pods or espresso machine?

Pod machines are the quickest and tidiest, but you're tied to one brand's capsules and the choice of coffee. Manual espresso machines give you the most control, but you do the grinding, dosing, tamping and frothing yourself, which is the opposite of lazy. Bean-to-cup sits in between. You pour in beans you like, press a button and the machine does the rest. The trade-off is a bigger machine and a bit more routine cleaning than a pod machine.

6. Check the size and the water tank

Bean-to-cup machines are bulky and need space above for filling the hopper and room at the side to pull out the water tank. Measure under your wall cupboards before you buy, and check the drip tray and grounds container sizes if several people use it every day.

7. Make the rest of breakfast easy

Coffee sorted? A slow cooker can have dinner going before you've finished your first cup, and a smart plug can switch on the lamps. Check the machine's manual before putting it on a smart plug.

FAQ

Are bean-to-cup coffee machines worth it?

If you drink coffee daily and like fresh beans, they can be. They cost more up front than pod machines, but beans can work out cheaper per cup than pods.

Do bean-to-cup machines need cleaning?

Yes. Regular rinsing, emptying the grounds and descaling. Many have automatic rinse or clean functions, and some parts are dishwasher-safe. Follow your model's manual.

Can I use pre-ground coffee?

The De'Longhi Magnifica Evo and Magnifica S support pre-ground coffee. Check other models' specs.

What’s the difference between a carafe and a steam wand?

A milk carafe froths and pours automatically for one-touch milk drinks. A steam wand means holding a jug and frothing by hand.

Can bean-to-cup machines make iced coffee?

Some can. The Ninja AutoBarista lists Cold Brew, Cold-Pressed and Over Ice drinks, plus cold foam. Others can make an espresso you pour over ice yourself.
