The short version: for the best no-subscription doorbell, get the eufy E340. It has two cameras (one pointed at your doorstep for parcels) and 8GB of storage built in. Got existing doorbell wiring and want 24/7 recording? Look at the eufy C31. On a budget, the eufy C30. Already have Alexa or Google speakers around the house? The Ring and Nest doorbells fit those systems, but plan for a subscription if you want saved videos.

The picks in detail

Best no-subscription doorbell

eufy Video Doorbell E340

The E340 is eufy's dual-camera doorbell. The front camera shows visitors in 2K. A second camera points down at your doorstep, so you can see parcels that would otherwise sit out of shot. It sends package alerts and uses on-device AI for person and face detection, so you get fewer pointless notifications about passing cats.

The big draw for UK buyers is storage: 8GB is built in, which eufy says holds around 90 days of video, and there's no monthly fee to watch it back. You can run it on its removable battery (eufy quotes up to six months per charge) or connect it to existing 8 to 24V doorbell wiring to keep the battery topped up. It works with many existing chimes and with Alexa and Google devices.

  • Dual cameras: 2K front camera plus a downward-facing doorstep camera
  • 8GB on-device storage (around 90 days of video, per eufy); expandable with HomeBase S380
  • Removable battery: up to 6 months per charge, 5-hour recharge (eufy's figures); or wired at 8–24V, >10VA
  • Colour night vision up to 5m; IP65 weather protection
  • 2.4GHz Wi-Fi only; works with existing chimes, eufy chimes, Alexa and Google Assistant

Why it's lazy-approved

  • No subscription needed to keep recordings
  • The parcel camera tells you when a delivery lands
  • Months between charges

Worth knowing

  • No 5GHz Wi-Fi support
  • Published reviews mention the occasional app hiccup

Best for 24/7 recording

eufy Video Doorbell C31

The C31 is a single-camera 2K doorbell with a 4:3 view, so you see more of the person at the door, top to bottom. When someone rings, a video call pops up on your phone. If you're out, it can play quick replies or let visitors leave a voice message.

Its party trick is what happens when you wire it in. Hook it up to your existing doorbell wiring and it can record continuously (24/7), with a 5-second pre-roll so you catch the moments before motion is detected. Footage goes on a microSD card up to 128GB (sold separately), with no subscription. It also runs on a quick-release 6,500mAh battery if you don't have wiring.

  • 2K video with a 4:3 aspect ratio
  • Quick-release 6,500mAh battery, or hardwired for 24/7 recording and 5-second pre-roll
  • Local storage on microSD up to 128GB (not included); expandable via HomeBase S380
  • IP65 weatherproof; rated for -20°C to 50°C
  • Works with eufy chimes, Alexa and Google Assistant

Why it's lazy-approved

  • Continuous recording without a monthly fee (when wired)
  • Quick replies answer the door for you

Worth knowing

  • You'll need to buy a microSD card
  • One camera, so no dedicated parcel view

Best budget pick

eufy Video Doorbell C30

The C30 is the simplest way into a no-subscription doorbell. It records 2K video with a wider 16:9 view, runs on a built-in 5,000mAh battery so there's no wiring, and stores clips on a microSD card up to 128GB. Like the C31, you get a pop-up video call when someone rings, plus quick replies and voice messages.

It works with the eufy HomeBase S380 if you want more storage and smarter detection later, and with Alexa and Google Assistant devices.

  • 2K video with a 16:9 view
  • Built-in 5,000mAh battery; no wiring needed
  • Local microSD storage up to 128GB (not included); no monthly fee
  • Pop-up video calls, quick replies and voice messages
  • Compatible with HomeBase S380, eufy chimes, Alexa and Google Assistant

Why it's lazy-approved

  • No drilling for wires
  • No monthly fee to keep clips

Worth knowing

  • The battery is built in, so the doorbell comes off the wall to charge
  • The 16:9 view shows less top-to-bottom than 4:3 models

Best for Alexa homes

Ring Battery Video Doorbell 2K

Ring is the name most people know, and its Battery Video Doorbell 2K is the entry point to the range. It records in what Ring calls Retinal 2K with up to 6x zoom, and you get live view, two-way talk and motion alerts for free. With an Echo device, you can hear announcements, and with an Echo Show you can see who's there.

Be aware of the subscription, though. Ring says that without a plan you get notifications, live view and two-way talk. To review, save and share videos, you need a Ring subscription (a 30-day free trial starts when you set the doorbell up). The battery is built in, so you take the doorbell off the wall with the included tool and charge it via USB-C.

  • Retinal 2K video with up to 6x zoom
  • Built-in rechargeable battery (USB-C); a Plus model has a quick-release battery
  • Free without a plan: alerts, live view and two-way talk
  • Recording, playback and sharing need a Ring subscription; videos stored for up to 180 days
  • Works with Alexa and Echo devices

Why it's lazy-approved

  • Very easy setup in an Alexa home
  • Answer the door from an Echo Show

Worth knowing

  • Missed a visitor? Without a subscription, you can't watch it back
  • Has to come off the wall to charge

Best for Google homes

Google Nest Doorbell (battery)

If your home runs on Google speakers and displays, the Nest Doorbell slots straight in. When someone presses the button, it can announce them on your "Hey Google" speakers. It runs on its built-in battery, or you can connect it to existing 8 to 24 VAC doorbell wiring so your old chime still rings.

Google includes three hours of event video history for free. For 30 or 60 days of history you need a Nest Aware subscription. Google says it can't record continuously (24/7) in either battery or wired mode. Video is HD at 960 × 1280 with a 145° diagonal view, in a portrait (taller than wide) frame.

  • HD video, 960 × 1280 pixels, 145° diagonal field of view
  • 3 hours of event history included; 30 or 60 days with Nest Aware
  • Built-in 6Ah battery, or wired to 8–24 VAC doorbell wiring
  • IP54 weather resistance
  • Announces visitors on Google speakers and displays

Why it's lazy-approved

  • Seamless with Google Home
  • Three hours of history without paying

Worth knowing

  • Longer history needs Nest Aware
  • Lower resolution than the 2K models here
  • Google says that even when wired, the battery may need charging indoors when temperatures drop below 0°C

How to choose a video doorbell

1. Decide whether you'll pay monthly

This matters more than resolution. Ring and Nest let you see live video for free, but saved history is limited or needs a plan. eufy's doorbells store recordings locally, so there's no monthly fee to watch clips back. Add up a few years of subscription before comparing prices.

2. Battery or wired?

Battery doorbells are quick to fit but need charging every few months. Wired models (or battery models connected to your doorbell wiring) stay topped up, and some unlock extra features like 24/7 recording. Check your wiring voltage first, and if in doubt, ask an electrician.

3. Check your Wi-Fi at the front door

Doorbells sit at the edge of your Wi-Fi range, and many (including the eufy E340) use 2.4GHz only. If the signal is weak at your front door, a mesh point or extender may be needed.

4. Pick your ecosystem

Alexa homes suit Ring; Google homes suit Nest; eufy works with both. Pair a doorbell with smart lighting and you can switch the hall light on for visitors without moving.

5. Be a good neighbour

If your camera captures beyond your own property, UK data protection rules can apply. Point it at your doorstep, use privacy zones where available, and see the ICO's guidance on domestic CCTV.

FAQ

Which video doorbells work without a subscription in the UK?

All three eufy doorbells here store recordings locally (built-in storage on the E340, microSD on the C30 and C31) with no monthly fee. The Google Nest Doorbell (battery) includes three hours of event history free. Ring's doorbells show live view and alerts without a plan, but you need a subscription to save and review videos.

Can I install a video doorbell myself?

Battery-powered models like the eufy C30 and Ring Battery Video Doorbell 2K are designed for DIY fitting. Wiring a doorbell to an existing transformer is also often DIY-friendly, but if you're not confident with electrics, use an electrician.

Will my existing doorbell chime still work?

With wired installation, often yes. The eufy E340 and Nest Doorbell (battery) can ring a compatible existing wired chime. In battery mode, you'll typically use a plug-in chime, a smart speaker or your phone instead.

How long do video doorbell batteries last?

It depends heavily on how busy your doorstep is and your settings. eufy quotes up to six months per charge for the E340. Treat any figure as a best case.

Are video doorbells legal in the UK?

Yes, but if your camera captures footage beyond your property's boundary (like the street or a neighbour's garden), data protection law can apply. The ICO publishes guidance on using domestic CCTV.
