The Shark PowerLite Clean & Empty Pet does the same for less. If you live with long hair, look at the Shark Stratos. On a budget, try the Shark PowerPro. Want maximum power and a big bin? All figures are from each brand's UK product page. Runtimes are the brands' maximums, usually in the lowest power mode with a non-motorised tool, so expect less on full power.

The picks in detail

Best for "never empty it"

Shark PowerDetect Speed Clean & Empty Pet Pro (IA3241UKT)

Emptying a stick vacuum is the bit that ruins the "quick hoover". This Shark sidesteps it. Slot it back into its auto-empty charging dock and it charges and empties itself after every clean. Shark says the dock holds up to 45 days of debris, and its HEPA filtration traps fine dust and allergens inside.

The vacuum adjusts itself as you go. Shark's PowerDetect system senses dirt, floor type, edges and which direction you're pushing, then boosts power where it's needed. It also picks up on the backward stroke. A cyan "Reveal" light shows up dust on hard floors, and the "Flexology" wand bends so you can get under the sofa without kneeling.

  • Auto-empty charging dock with HEPA filtration; up to 45 days of hands-free emptying (Shark's figure)
  • Up to 60 minutes of runtime in Eco mode with the non-motorised tool; 5-hour charge
  • 0.47L dust cup; 21cm cleaning path
  • Includes a motorised hand tool and a 20cm duster-crevice tool
  • 5-year guarantee on registration (2 years on batteries)

Why it's lazy-approved

  • No more emptying the dust cup by hand
  • Adjusts its own power, so you don't fiddle with modes
  • Bends to reach under furniture

Worth knowing

  • The dock takes up floor space and needs a socket
  • One of Shark's priciest cordless models; check stock, as some colourways sell out

Best value self-emptying

Shark PowerLite Clean & Empty Pet (BU3623UKT)

If you want the self-emptying dock but not the top-tier price, the PowerLite Clean & Empty is Shark's lighter, simpler take. It still empties and recharges in its base after every clean, and Shark says the base captures over 99.97% of dust and allergens thanks to HEPA filtration.

FloorDetect adjusts the brush-roll speed between carpets and hard floors, and the Pet version comes with a FurFins pet tool and a crevice tool. The trade-off is runtime: up to 40 minutes rather than an hour, which is still plenty for most flats and smaller houses.

  • Auto-empty base with HEPA filtration; empties after every clean
  • Up to 40 minutes of runtime in Eco mode with the non-motorised tool
  • 0.38L dust cup; hand vac weighs 1.41kg
  • FloorDetect brush-roll speed adjustment; FurFins pet tool included
  • 5-year guarantee (2 years on batteries)

Why it's lazy-approved

  • The same "dock it and forget it" emptying for less money
  • Light hand vac for stairs and sofas

Worth knowing

  • Shorter runtime than the PowerDetect
  • Fewer smart sensors than the pricier model

Specs: SharkNinja UK product page.

Best for long hair

Shark Stratos Anti Hair Wrap Plus (IZ400UK)

If you live with long hair, human or otherwise, you'll know the joy of cutting tangles off a brush-roll with scissors. Shark's Anti Hair Wrap Plus removes long, short and pet hair from the brush-roll while you clean, so that job disappears. Shark calls it its best ever hair pick-up.

Clean Sense IQ adjusts power to the dirt it detects, and an anti-odour cartridge in the vacuum is designed to stop the dust cup smelling of dog. Shark quotes up to 60 minutes of runtime with the removable battery, so you can keep a spare charging if you have a big house.

  • Anti Hair Wrap Plus removes hair from the brush-roll as you clean
  • Clean Sense IQ automatic power adjustment
  • Anti-Odour Technology cartridge
  • Up to 60 minutes of runtime in Eco mode; removable battery; 3.5-hour charge
  • 5-year guarantee on registration (2 years on batteries)

Why it's lazy-approved

  • No more de-tangling the brush-roll
  • Long runtime with a swappable battery

Worth knowing

  • You still empty the dust cup by hand
  • Got pets? The Pet Pro version adds a motorised pet tool

Best budget pick

Shark PowerPro Cordless with Anti Hair Wrap (IZ380UK)

The PowerPro covers the essentials at the lower end of Shark's cordless range. You get Anti Hair Wrap on the brush-roll, a bendy "Flexology" wand that also lets it stand up on its own for storage (no wall mount needed), and a removable battery that you can charge anywhere.

Shark quotes up to 50 minutes of runtime and says its Anti-Allergen Complete Seal traps over 99.9% of dust and allergens inside the vacuum. There's no self-emptying dock or dirt sensing, but if you just want a reliable stick that doesn't tangle, it does the job.

  • Anti Hair Wrap brush-roll; Floor Detect
  • Up to 50 minutes of runtime; removable battery; 3.5-hour charge
  • Flexology wand bends under furniture and folds for freestanding storage
  • 3.45kg listed weight; 114.3cm tall
  • Includes crevice and upholstery tools; 5-year guarantee (2 years on batteries)

Why it's lazy-approved

  • Stands up on its own, no drilling for a wall mount
  • No tangles on the brush-roll

Worth knowing

  • No auto-empty dock
  • No automatic power adjustment

Best for raw power

Dyson V16 Piston Animal

Dyson calls the V16 Piston Animal its most powerful anti-tangle cordless vacuum. It claims 315AW of suction from its Hyperdymium motor, and a floor head with two cone-shaped brush bars that de-tangle hair up to 25 inches long straight into the bin. The head works on all floor types, so there's no swapping.

It doesn't self-empty, but Dyson's "CleanCompaktor" bin compresses dust as you clean. Dyson says that lets it hold up to 30 days' worth of debris, and the bin wipes clean as you empty it. A sensor counts dust particles up to 15,000 times a second and adjusts the power to balance suction and runtime. Dyson quotes up to 70 minutes.

  • 315AW claimed suction; 70-minute maximum runtime; 4.5-hour charge
  • 1.3L compressing bin (up to 30 days of debris, per Dyson); wipe-clean emptying
  • Cone-shaped brush bars de-tangle hair up to 25 inches
  • 3.4kg; filtration of 99.9% of particles down to 0.1 microns (Dyson's figure)
  • Works with the MyDyson app for updates

Why it's lazy-approved

  • Big bin you rarely need to empty
  • One floor head for everything
  • Dust sensor balances power and runtime for you

Worth knowing

  • The most expensive pick here by some distance
  • No auto-empty dock: you still empty the bin yourself, just less often

Specs: Dyson UK product page.

How to choose a cordless vacuum

1. Decide how you feel about emptying it

This is the biggest "do less" question. An auto-empty dock means you never tip a dust cup over the bin, but it needs floor space and a socket. Without a dock, a bigger or compressing bin means emptying less often.

2. Be realistic about runtime

The headline figure is usually in the lowest power mode with a non-motorised tool. On full power with the floor head, expect a lot less. For a bigger house, a removable battery (and a spare) helps.

3. Hair, hair, hair

If anyone in the house has long hair, or you have a pet, get an anti-tangle brush-roll. It's the single biggest time-saver after self-emptying. Pet owners should also read our pet hair guide.

4. Pair it with a robot

A cordless stick is perfect for stairs, sofas and quick spills. For the day-to-day floors, a robot vacuum does the job on a schedule, and a robot vacuum and mop combo handles hard floors too.

FAQ

Are self-emptying cordless vacuums worth it?

If you hate emptying the dust cup, or have allergies and want to avoid the dust cloud, yes. You pay more and need room for the dock. Shark says its PowerDetect dock holds up to 45 days of debris.

How long do cordless vacuum batteries last?

Runtimes in the specs are best-case figures. The brands here quote 40 to 70 minutes, usually in eco mode with a non-motorised tool. Shark guarantees its batteries for 2 years.

Can a cordless vacuum replace a corded one?

For most homes, yes. The main limits are runtime on full power and dust cup size. Big houses may want a spare battery.

Shark or Dyson?

Dyson's V16 claims the higher suction and has the bigger bin. The Sharks here all cost less, and two of them have auto-empty docks. If emptying is your pet hate, Shark's Clean & Empty models are the lazier choice.

Do cordless vacuums work on stairs?

Yes. That's one of their biggest advantages. Most convert to a handheld for steps, sofas and car seats.
